Civil unions for Italian same-sex couples ( law n° 76/2016) and for foreign nationals in Italy. The couple who can have access to civil unions has to be made of two over-18 people of the same-sex. The couple can freely choose the municipality where they want to perform their civil union, regardless of their own residency (Article 70-a subparagraph 1). The application has to be jointly submitted from both the members of the couple to the Marriage and Civil Union Court.
OFFICIAL AND SYMBOLIC CIVIL UNIONS
The Italian law 76/2016 provides as follows: the couple that can have access to the civil union has to be made of two over-18 people of the same sex. Therefore, though lagging behind other countries, is now possible getting civilly and law-abiding married in Italy, as well.
